UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Qualified students are encouraged to participate
in undergraduate research projects. This option provides hands-on experience
in research design, experimental techniques, instrumentation, data analysis,
and scientific writing.
By mutual agreement with a faculty member, the student undertakes a research
project under the direction of the faculty member. Undergraduate research
experience is particularly valuable for students who wish to find employment
in a laboratory or attend graduate or professional school after receiving
the bachelor's degree. For more information a list of faculty members
and their general research interests are located under
Faculty Research Interests above.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
REGISTRATION PROCEDURE
The Biochemistry Department strongly encourages
qualified* undergraduates to participate in undergraduate research. To
efficiently use online registration, undergraduate research participants
should follow the procedure outlined below.
1. Talk with a biochemistry
department faculty member whose research area is of interest to you.
2. If the faculty member consents to serve as a research mentor,
you and the faculty member should agree upon an appropriate number
of undergraduate research (BCHM 4994) credit hours and grade option
(A/F or P/F).
3. Remind the faculty member to forward your undergraduate
research information (your name, student identification number, BCHM 4994 credit
hours, grade option, and a brief title for the research) to the departmental office.
4. Following these steps, you may register on-line for
BCHM 4994. Failure to follow this procedure will result in being dropped
from this class.
5. After the add period (end of first week of classes) you will
not be able to register for research.
* Minimum GPA of 2.0. To register as P/F,
a student must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at Virginia
Tech and have a GPA of 2.0 or better.
