Graduate Education in the Biochemistry of Human Health and Disease
The Departments of Human Nutrition, Foods & Exercise and Biochemistry have
established a joint graduate committee to broaden the research opportunities
and education paths available to entering doctoral students. The combined
expertise of faculty in Biochemistry and HNFE spans the spectrum of life science,
from investigating basic scientific principles to the application of these
principles to health maintenance and disease prevention and treatment.
Activities include a joint orientation week for students to learn about
the cutting-edge research of faculty in both departments, a rotation system for
students to participate in research in three labs in either department during
their first year, and joint courses and seminars in biochemistry, molecular and
cell biology, bioinformatics, and other relevant topics. At the end of their
first academic year, students can select a lab in either department to pursue
their doctoral work and join the relevant department to complete the remainder
of their degree requirements. |
