Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, a college town of approximately 35,000 inhabitants situated at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains in the scenic New River Valley. Ample student housing is available in the surrounding community, much of it within walking or biking distance to the campus. Information can be obtained from the Virginia Tech Off Campus Housing Office.

The Blacksburg Transit system, which is available free of charge to students with valid university ID, also provides direct bus service to the campus from all major residential areas.

Blacksburg is just a few miles from US Interstate 81, which can be used to reach Roanoke (pop. 150,000; approximately 40 miles) and Washington, DC (approximately 250 miles). Commercial airline service is available from Roanoke Regional Airport, which has direct daily service to Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, New York City (La Guardia), Pittsburgh, and Washington, DC.

Recreational and cultural activities are an important part of life at Virginia Tech and include concerts, plays, performances, speeches and panel discussions by internationally prominent individuals, and world-class sporting events. Blacksburg is a host city for the prestigious Tour DuPont cross-country bicycle race, as well as numerous crafts fairs and other festivals. Jefferson National Forest forms Blacksburg's backyard.

The Appalachian Trail and the New River lie within a few miles of campus while the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway is a 30 minute drive away. Abundant opportunities for all-season outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, boating, skiing and fishing, are all within easy reach. In addition, Washington, DC, colonial Williamsburg, Great Smokey Mountains and Shenandoah National Parks, and the shores of Virginia and the Carolinas are within a few hours drive.
