Virginia
Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, a college town of approximately
35,000 inhabitants situated at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains
in the scenic New River Valley. Ample student housing is available
in the surrounding community, much of it within walking or biking

The Blacksburg
Transit system, which is available free of charge to students
with valid university ID, also provides direct bus service to
the campus from all major residential areas. |
Blacksburg is just a few miles from US Interstate 81, which
can be used to reach Roanoke (pop. 150,000; approximately 40
miles) and Washington, DC (approximately 250 miles). Commercial
airline service is available from Roanoke Regional Airport,
which has direct daily service to Atlanta, Baltimore, Charlotte,
Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, New York City (La Guardia), Pittsburgh,
and Washington, DC. |
Recreational and cultural activities are an important part of
life at Virginia Tech and include concerts, plays, performances,
speeches and panel discussions by internationally prominent
individuals, and world-class sporting events. Blacksburg is
a host city for the prestigious Tour DuPont cross-country bicycle
race, as well as numerous crafts fairs and other festivals.

The Appalachian Trail
and the New River lie within a few miles of campus while the
scenic Blue Ridge Parkway
is a 30 minute drive away. Abundant opportunities for all-season
outdoor activities, including biking, hiking, boating, skiing
and fishing, are all within easy reach. In addition, Washington,
DC, colonial Williamsburg, Great Smokey Mountains and Shenandoah
National Parks, and the shores of Virginia and the Carolinas
are within a few hours drive. |
